Use SJA when a particular job needs its own discussion

A new method, unfamiliar surroundings or several businesses working in one area can make a job-specific discussion useful. Start with what differs from the usual procedure. Establish what the assignment's other plans and responsible parties require.

Norwegian regulations require risk assessment; this guide presents SJA as a practical way of working. The Labour Inspection Authority highlights participation in SJA on construction sites. SJA does not replace necessary training, assessment at the site or specific requirements for the work.

A suggested discussion before starting

Choose an order that keeps the discussion specific and gives participants room to ask questions.

  • Define the job: location, task and the people and businesses involved.
  • Walk through the steps in the order you intend to carry them out.
  • Describe hazards, actions and practical conditions at each relevant step.
  • Agree who follows up each action and what needs to be in place before starting.
  • Check that participants understand the discussion. Resolve questions and uncertainty before continuing.
  • Agree which changes will make you stop and reassess during the job.

Fictional example: clearing an area beside an occupied building

An imaginary service team will clear an outdoor area while the building remains in use. A contractor joins the planning. During the discussion, the team realises that its intended storage position affects an entrance used by the customer.

They leave the working method unresolved until the contact person has clarified access and coordination with the customer. They then revise the steps and discuss the same version with everyone involved. This illustrates the process, rather than a complete plan for barriers, traffic or machinery.

Signing, checking participants and readiness are separate

In RettHMS, a participant confirms that they have reviewed a particular SJA version. A worker separately checks who is actually participating and the necessary site arrangements. A signature does not verify that every safety measure has been carried out.

Guests provide their own names and company details. Their signature is neither proof of competence nor a qualified electronic signature. Changing the SJA content creates a new version for participants to review and sign. A new participant joining unchanged content is handled separately.

Common pitfalls

A reused SJA may describe the previous workplace. A long list of generic hazards may hide what is different today. Collecting signatures without discussion can also leave questions unheard.

Compare the content with the place and situation before using it. If people or conditions change, address the change rather than assuming an earlier confirmation covers it.

The next step in RettHMS

See the SJA workflow for versions, participants, QR or link sharing and a separate participant check. All active workers have ordinary operational SJA access. External participants can sign without an account; signing requires a connection and confirmed storage before it is shown as complete.
